Fig. 14 Time resolved ESI-MS for nanocluster synthesis from solutions containing [L 6 ]/
[PPh 3 ] ¼ 1. The sequence shows that [Au 9 L 6 4 Cl] 2+ cluster growth is preceded by the formation
of monodisperse [Au 8 L 6 4 ] 2+ clusters through degradation of larger clusters. Figure reproduced

Kamei et al. [ 159 ] used ESI-MS to monitor the reactions of two AuNCs
[Au 6 (dppp) 4 ](NO 3 ) 2 ((1)inFig. 15 )[ 102 ]and[Au 9 (PPh 3 ) 8 ](NO 3 ) 2 [ 160 ]. ESI-MS
revealed that [Au 6 (dppp) 4 ] 2+ (Fig. 16a ) transforms to monodisperse
[Au 8 (dppp) 4 Cl 2 ] 2+ upon treatment with 20 equiv. of ClAuPPh 3 . The subsequent
addition of an alcoholic solution of NaPF 6 resulted in the precipitation of crude
[Au 8 (dppp) 4 Cl 2 ](PF 6 ) 2 which was recrystallised in dichloromethane to yield crys-
tals suitable for X-ray crystallography ((2) in Fig. 15 ). ESI-MS was also used to
