D/Creating a MicroSD
Image
Certain features on Galileo are only available if
you boot from a microSD card instead of the
on-board flash memory. This is because the
amount of on-board storage is too limited to
include all the possible features. For instance,
if you'd like to use Python or Node.js to program
the board or if you'd like to use a PCI Express
WiFi card, you'll need to download the Intel-
provided operating system, load it onto a mi-
croSD card, and have your Galileo boot from it.
To do this, you'll need:
• MicroSD card in any size from 1 gigabyte to 32 gigabytes.
• A card reader for writing the data to the MicroSD card from your com-
puter. If you have a standard SD card slot on your computer, you can use
an adapter as well.
Here's how to create the SD card and boot off of it:
1. Download the file labeled “LINUX IMAGE FOR SD for Intel Galileo” from
Intel's download site .
2. If you're running Mac OS X :
a. Download a 7Zip file expander such as Keka or Ex7z .
b. Open the Linux image from Intel with your 7Zip file expander software
and expand it to a temporary directory.
c. Insert the microSD card into your computer.
d. Open Disk Utility, found in /Applications/Utilities .
