occurred. Evidence of this event is obvious in the Kiliman-
jaro record (Figure 2c) as a sharp but short-lived depletion in
18 O, which suggests an abrupt and extreme cooling episode
[Thompson et al., 2002]. Evidence for this abrupt change is

also seen in numerous climatic, biological, and archeological
records from around the world, including several from the
