In-Depth Information
Tableau Public is free and enables you to put together dashboards with a
variety of charts and publish online. Although, as the name suggests, you
must make your data public and upload it to Tableau servers. See more at
http://tableausoftware.com.
MANY EYES
Many Eyes is a project by IBM Research that enables you to upload datasets
and explore your data via a wide variety of visualization tools, some traditional
and others experimental. The site started in 2007 and updates stopped in
2010 but remain online for public use. Like Tableau Public, the downside is
that your data becomes public after you upload it to the servers. See more
at http://many-eyes.com.
DATA-SPECIFIC TOOLS
The following software options cast a wide net in that they try to handle
multiple data types and offer a wide variety of visualizations. This is great for
analysis and exploration because they enable you to quickly see your data
from different angles. However, sometimes it's better to specialize and do
one thing well.
Gephi
If you've ever seen a network graph or a visualization with a bunch of edges
and nodes (that might or might not have looked like a hairball), most likely
it was made with Gephi (shown in Chapter 2, “Visualization: The Medium”).
It's open-source graphing software that enables you to interactively explore
networks and hierarchy. See more at http://gephi.org.
ImagePlot
As you saw in Chapter 2, ImagePlot Software Studies Lab at California Institute
for Telecommunication and Information enables you to explore large sets
of images as if they were data points. Plot by color, time, or volume to, for
example, explore the trends and changes of an artist or photo collection. See
more at http://lab.softwarestudies.com/p/imageplot.html.
