In-Depth Information
ROUTE OPTIONS
Driving south from Egilsstaðir, there are a few options (for motorists heading north from
Djúpivogur, read these directions in reverse).
This route is covered on ( Click here ) .
Route 1 From Egilsstaðir, the Ring Road heads south, then east through the Breiðdalur
valley to Breiðdalsvík, then weaves along the coast to Djúpivogur. This
Egilsstaðir-Breiðdalsvík route is 82km (note: not all of this section of the Ring Road is
sealed).
Route 939 A shortcut is provided by the rough (gravel) but scenic Rte 939 via the Öxi
mountain pass (not a great option in bad weather or fog). This pass turns off the Ring
Road about 48km south of Egilsstaðir, connecting with the head of Berufjörður after
19km.
Routes 92 & 96 A third option is to travel from Egilsstaðir to Breiðdalsvík via Rtes 92
and 96, travelling via the fjords Reyðarfjörður, Fáskrúðsfjörður and Stöðvarfjörður. This
option is only slightly longer than the Ring Road option (92km), and is sealed the entire
length. This is often the only option in winter, when snow closes the Ring Road stretch at
Breiðdalsheiði. It has even been mooted that the Ring Road may one day be officially
rerouted to take in Rtes 92 and 96.
