Getting There & Away
There is no bus service to Vopnafjörður.
From Vopnafjörður it's 137km to Reykjahlíð and 136km to Egilsstaðir (via Rte 85 and
the Ring Road), so check fuel levels before you leave town.
It's a shorter, more scenic (and more hair-raising) route to Egilsstaðir (95km) via the
gravel mountain road Rte 917.
WORTH A TRIP
ROUTE 917
East of Vopnafjörður, the truly spectacular 73km mountain drive along mostly unpaved
Rte 917 takes you over 655m
Hellisheiði
and down to the east coast. The road may be
impassable in bad weather but in summer is generally doable in a small car. It climbs up a
series of switchbacks and hairpin bends before dropping down to the striking glacial river
deltas on the
Héraðssandur
.
