Hólmavík

Fishing town Hólmavík offers sweeping views over the still waters of Steingrímsfjörður
and has a quirky witchcraft museum. The no-nonsense village is the best place to stock up
on supplies before venturing off into the more rugged territory further north.
NECROPANTS…
Of all the mystical displays at the Museum of Icelandic Sorcery & Witchcraft, perhaps the
most bizarre is a plastic replica of legendary 'necropants' - trousers made from the skin
of a dead man's legs and groin. It was commonly believed that if a donor made a verbal
agreement that his corpse could be skinned upon his death, the resulting necropants
would produce money when worn (with the scrotum always full of coins). In order for this
to work, the skinned portion of the corpse had to be without holes; the sorcerer had to
put the necropants on immediately; then a coin stolen from a poor widow had to be
placed in the necropants' scrotum.
Though the boundless scrotum loot was a boon, there was a catch: if the sorcerer
didn't get someone else to put on the pants before he himself died, he would be infested
with lice for eternity.
