The Hekla Center is part of the Leirubakki compound (camping, hotel, restaurant, petrol).
It details the explosive history of Hekla in a deliberately dark building with flashing lights
and multimedia exhibits. You'll learn that the volcano is long overdue to erupt. The centre

Tours
The many horse farms around eastern Þjórsárdalur offer rides, and most have accommoda-
tion. Expect to pay Ikr6500 to Ikr9000 for a one-hour ride to Ikr13,000 for a three-hour
ride, though prices can drop for groups.

Hidden along Rtes 271 and 272, 9km northeast of Hella, a friendly French-Icelandic fam-
ily specialises in six- to eight-day Highland rides. Sleeping-bag accommodation is avail-
