Filters
The filters contained within image-editing programs are capable of producing truly stun-
ning effects. Digital filters are based on the traditional photographic versions, which are
placed in front of the lens of the camera to change the way the image is captured. Now, with
the click of a button, it is possible to make extremely complex changes to our images almost
instantaneously - changes that a few years ago we couldn't even imagine.
Photoshop Elements ships with a comprehensive range of filters built right into the program.
If you find that you require filtering options not available in the program, it is also possible
to add to Elements' power by installing extra filters or plug-ins. These small utility programs
are produced by third-party companies and generally target a particular task such as
grayscale conversion or simulating film stock appearance.
This chapter covers the basics of filtering, provides examples and details of different filtering
effects.
