Until the release of the Recompose Tool in Photoshop Elements 8
the only way to change the format of a photo was to use the Crop
Tool (1) or the Free Transform tool (2).
Both approaches had their own problems. The Crop tool removed
important parts of the photo and the Transform tool squashed and
stretched all the details in a photo, even if they were important.
The new Recompose Tool (3) provides a better solution by allowing
the user to mark important parts of the picture and therefore pro-
tect them from alteration in the transformation process.
The example above displays the results of all three approaches as
the landscape photo is reformatted to a square shape.

The Recompose tool's options bar contains 'Protect' (1) and 'Delete' (2) brushes and erasers, brush tip size
slider (3), a highlight skin tones button (4), crop preset menu (5), crop width and height input boxes (6) and
threshold control (7).
