Research on Localization Technology in Wireless Sensor
Networks

Abstract. Localization is one of the mainly topic of wireless sensor networks.
Localization algorithm in wireless sensor networks can be divided into two
types: range-based localization algorithm and range-free localization algorithm.
LDV-HOP algorithm, based on range-based localization algorithm, is presented
in this paper. The local positioning accuracy is improved by cycling the local-
ization result under the small amount of low-power conditions. The simulation
of the algorithm is carried out in the NS2 platform to verify correctness and fea-
sibility. At last, the algorithm is employed in the physical experiments to further
validate the good accuracy in the practical application.

1 Introduction
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) in recent years are widely concerned by the inter-
national academic and industrial researchers. WSNs are widely used in the industrial,
military, environmental and other fields [1]. WSNs are arranged in the monitoring
area by large number of sensor nodes through wireless communication to form a
multi-hop's self-organizing network, which aims to collaborate perception, acquisition
and processing of network coverage area to be monitored object information, and
send to observer [2]. GPS is currently the most mature of the most widely used posi-
tioning system with high positioning accuracy, real time, anti-interference ability, etc.,
but the positioning was only suitable for outdoor environment without shelter. Mean-
while the user nodes of GPS have many disadvantages such as high energy consump-
tion, the big volume, high cost and infrastructure-needed to fix and so on. WSNs
nodes are improved rapidly in working around the clock indoor and outdoor and low
consumption of cost and power. WSNs node localization is the key supporting tech-
nologies and research focus. The localization of sensor network is essential for system
monitoring to determine the location of the incident or to obtain information. WSNs
localization is one of the most basic functions, and plays a key role in effective of
sensor network applications [3].
