Abstract. The adverse impact of rainfall infiltration to asphalt concrete
pavement structure should not be ignored. Based on the theory of unsaturated
seepage theory, in this paper we analyze the progress and rules of pavement
infiltration in rainfall condition, put forward some measures to prevent damage
of asphalt concrete pavement, and provide reliable basis for drainage design of
asphalt concrete pavement.
Keywords: asphalt concrete pavement; rainfall infiltration; prevention measures.
1 Introduction
Water is an important natural factor of causing highway damage. Water seepage action
accelerates the pavement performance deterioration, and shortens the using life of
asphalt concrete pavement [1]. In fact, asphalt concrete pavement is pervious, even has
a strong permeability. When the asphalt pavement cracks, the small cracks have a
greater ability to transport water, and they can change the local pavement moisture
content to larger extent, reduce pavement strength, finally destruct roads and reduce
transport capacity of roads. Based on the unsaturated seepage theory, in this paper we
analyze the progress and rules of pavement infiltration in rainfall condition, and put
forward some effective measures to prevent damage of asphalt concrete pavement.
2 Mechanism of Asphalt Concrete Pavement Infiltration
The difference between asphalt concrete pavement infiltration and soil infiltration is
that in the asphalt concrete pavement surface porosity is larger than soil, but it is very
thin, in addition, the road surface materials conduction water ability will change with
different water content. Therefore, the asphalt concrete pavement infiltration and soil
infiltration are distinguishing [2].
In rainfall process, the rainwater can enter and be detained in the pores of asphalt
concrete pavement surface layer, and the speed of seepage will be very slow to the
outside, it needs several weeks or months to gradually remove the rainwater. The whole
pavement structure is similar to be placed in a closed slot, the water is sealed in the
