1.3 Production Process of Sludge Ceramsite

The lightweight ceramsite performance test can basis of the People's Republic of
China national standard "lightweight aggregate test method" (GB 2842-81) and the
People's Republic of China building material industry standard "Lightweight ceramsite
and ceramic sand" (JC 487-92).
2 The Prospect
2.1 Technical Availability Analysis
Sludge is one biological solid which separated from sewage, The main inorganic
component is SiO 2, Al 2 O 3 and Fe 2 O 3 , such as clay.
The main factors of ceramsite's expansion is chemical composition of raw materials.
According to their effect can be divided into three groups: one is ceramic, it contains
SiO 2, Al 2 O 3 and Fe 2 O 3, the quality of raw material is 3/4; Second is the cosolvent, i t
contains Na 2 O, K 2 O, FeO, MgO; Third is producing gas material which produced gas
under high temperature, such as H 2 O, O 2, CO 2, CO, H 2. According to research [5], to
made high quality ceramsite products, raw material chemical composition must meet
the following requirements:
SiO 2 : 48%~79%, Al 2 O 3 : 8%~25%, Fe 2 O 3 : 3%~12%, CaO+MgO: 1%~12%,
K 2 O+Na 2 O: 0.5%~7.0%.
Because of dewatering sludge has low SiO 2 content and high loss on ignition,
contract after calcination, do not have expand performance. So in order to produce high
quality ceramsite, we should take kaolin, black clay and chromium residue as raw
materials. Kaolin can enhance raw ball SiO 2 and Al 2 O 3 proportion; Chromium residue,
has high content of CaO, MgO, K 2 O, Na 2 O, can increases the cosolvent content. If the
materials of chemical composition can control in the above range, then can burn out of
a certain intensity ceramsite.
