1 Application and Development of Lightweight Ceramsite
1.1 Overview of Lightweight Ceramsite
Lightweight ceramsite is one variety of ceramsite, Chinese industry standard lightweight
ceramsite and pottery sand JC 487-92 defined it as stacking density less than 500 kg/m3
ceramsite. According to the stacking density is divided into 200 and 300, 400 and 500
four grade. According to its maximum grain size is divided into 10 mm and 20 mm.
According to its quality index points is divided into superior quality(A), first-class(B),
qualified (C) [2].
Lightweight ceramsite use high quality clay, shale or fly ash as the main raw
material, made of high temperature firing and expanded through rotary kiln and it is a
good light-weight aggregate. It has excellent properties, such as low density,
compression strength, high porosity, high coefficient of softing, great freezing
resistance: 耐冻性 抗凝固性 抗冻性 , good ARR etc, because of its internal
cellular structure. Using ceramsite these superior performance, it could be widely used
in building material, gardening, food and beverage, thermal insulation material,
chemical industry, oil industry, its application field is still continues to expand.
1.2 The Research of Sludge-Ceramsite at Home and Abroad
1.2.1 Overseas Research Status
The Overseas sludge disposal and resource start earlier, 1994 Wisconsin company built
the world's first using municipal sludge (main raw material is fly ash) to produce
ceramsite factory, the annual output is approximately 10 million m 3 , because the
product's good quality to get government and sewage treatment plants 'subsidies,
enterprise economic and social comprehensive benefits is better. To the end of 2002,
the United States has completed six ceramsite factories, In Japan, they use burned
sludge powder as main raw materials and adding combustible powder, according to the
need of GCV deployment into mixture, add water for prilling, made light weight
aggregate which burned in the chain sintering machine. The sludge-ceramsite's
sintering temperature is 1000~1100 , sintering time is 25~30 min, compression
strength is 3~4 Mpa waster absorption is 16%~18%
Nakouzi S, used reusing dye sludge as pottery grains of pottery-making
composition, instead of the original land landfill disposal method which has obtained
certain economic benefits, and it solves the problem sludge disposal [3].
1.2.2 Domestic Research Situation
Chinese scholars such as ChiChangJiang used sludge as main raw materials and mixed
with clay and little solid fuel, produced sludge ceramsite [4]. HuaSui ceramsite
factory(Guangzhou, China) used sludge as accessory material (main materials is clay or
silt) produced lightweight ceramsite, daily production has reached 300t/d. The high
temperature calcination, it can eliminate the various harmful substances in sludge,
effective to protect the ecological environment, water resources and land resources, and
ceramsite has good performance economic benefits and social benefits of good, future
development prospects are bright.
