Use of Anaerobic Sludge for Manufacturing
Light Ceramsite

Abstract. As byproducts derived from the regular activities of wastewater
treatment plants,it is necessary to implement an adequate disposal of sludges.On
the basis of introducing the study on using sewage sludge from sewage treatment
plant as a source to produce a new kind of buildingmaterial-light ceramsite both
at home and abroad,the application prospect of the technology on aspect of
preparation technologym,technical feasibility analysis and the economic and
environmental profits are discussed.

As the sewage treatment plant scale expands unceasingly and processing level
enhances unceasingly, excess sludge emissions are getting more serious. The sludge
emissions of a secondary biological wastewater treatment plant is 0.3% ~ 0.5%(volume
fraction). At present the total emissions of wastewater is about 400 million tons in our
country. How to reasonably dispose of sludge has become a urgent task. Sludge
treatment methods included landfill, burn, composting methods at home and abroad.
These methods can dispose lots of sludge, is the effective ways of sludge treatment, but
there are also many problems. At the present stage resource recovered technology is
aimed at organic component of sludge, lack of use of inorganic composition. Therefore,
seeking economic and effective reduction, harmless and recycling sludge treatment
technology have the important meaning.
Ceramsite as a kind of lightweight aggregate, with its light, heat preservation,
environmental protection and other characteristics has the good application value. The
production mainly is clay ceramsite in our country, but most of the clay source from
farmland, do not accord with sustainable development. Therefore use sludge as main
raw materials, made a kind of light ceramsite after the decarburization and firing
inflation, this method can consume lots dewatering sludge, not only the cost
significantly lower than sludge incineration, and also avoid secondary pollution,
especially fits our reduction, harmless and recycling solid waste treatment, will have
broad development prospects [1].
