Abstract. In 3 th G system network planning, the cell capacity calculation is a
very important and critical issue. Assumed under the single-service of TD-
SCDMA, this paper investigated the uplink cell capacities of the TD-SCDMA
system and analyzed the relations between the user numbers and the required
signal-to-noise ratios(SNR). Focusing the issue, firstly, we determined some
several uplink cell parameters of TD-SCDMA cellular network based on the
3GPP specifications, such as SNR, processing gain, etc. Secondly, the equation
of the uplink performance of TD-SCDMA was derived from two cases of a
single cell and multiple-cell. It will provide a strong theoretical support for the
future TD-SCDMA network planning and optimization.

1 Introduction
The third generation mobile communication system has started to comprehensively
plan and commercially operate [1][2]. The 3 th G consists of two modes, a frequency
division duplex (FDD) mode [3] and a time-division duplex(TDD) mode [4]. TDD
mode has two options, one is wideband TDD (WB-TDD) with chip rate of 3.84 Mcps
and the other is low-chip rate TDD (LCR-TDD) with that of 1.28 Mcps. LCR-TDD is
also called as TD-SCDMA (Time Division Synchronous CDMA) System. Most of
the existing researches on capacity of cellular system are for FDD-CDMA systems.
The single-cell and multi-cell uplink and downlink capacity formula has been derived
.So far research on TD-SCDMA system capacity is little and limited to be derived.
This paper is mainly to solve this problem, and it deduces the limit theory load
capacity under the single-cell and multiple-cell conditions. In general, capacity
analysis method has two kinds: One analysis method is from traffic statistical; another
is derived from the view of interference. The paper chooses the latter. It mainly study
