Each IOU on the M8000/M9000 has four PCIe switches. This organization pro-
vides good performance, as each switch controls only two PCIe slots. It also means
each IOU can support as many as four domains; this becomes possible when the
board is placed in Quad-XSB mode, as discussed later in this chapter.
Figure 2.3 shows graphical representations of the crossbar interconnects for
the M8000, M9000-32, and M9000-64. The crossbar board (XBU) provides a point-
to-point communication between boards. It is programmed with a mask so that
when the domain is powered on, the firmware identifies the other boards with
which each XBU can communicate.

Important elements when considering a virtualization technology are environ-
ment setup (e.g., disk layout, file system, networking), fault isolation, flexible
resource management, and extensibility. One major benefit from this design is
the ability to physically add or remove boards from a running system without
shutting down the domain. Adding a board to the system does not affect other
