For Logical Domains, Ops Center collects and displays the following data re-
garding the host, in addition to the data mentioned above:
Virtual pool assignment
Total and available CPU threads
Total and available cryptographic units
Total and available memory
This information will help you configure domains. Data is also collected about
each domain—the same data collected about a non-virtualized system.
9.3.8 Managing Assets
Once you know how well your systems and VEs are performing, you can make
educated decisions about their futures. Is there a problem that needs to be ad-
dressed? Does the system have sufficient spare capacity to support another VE?
As mentioned earlier in this chapter, Ops Center can provision systems and their
VEs. For example, you might create a group called “Unused and Underutilized
Systems” and search it to find an appropriate home for a new workload. The BUI
can also start and stop systems and their VEs.
Eventually you will discover a system with VEs that is overloaded—perhaps
CPU utilization is too high, or maybe the system has been paging regularly. Ops
Center provides two types of solutions to this problem, each of which improves
operational flexibility.
The first solution is to dynamically modify resource controls of VEs. Perhaps
you have reserved 16 of the 256 CPUs in a T5440 for unplanned demand by one
VE. You can use Ops Center to assign some of those CPUs to a VE that needs
them, while that VE continues to run. Or perhaps one of the 24 Containers on a
system is unexpectedly busy. You can use Ops Center to increase the number of
FSS shares assigned to that Container without rebooting it. By doing so, you en-
able the system to continue to meet its response time goals while you investigate
the cause of the new demand.
If there simply aren't enough resources on a system to meet the needs of its
VEs, it's time to use the second solution provided by Ops Center: VE migration.
Under your direction, Ops Center can move a VE from one system to another
using the migration features of the VE technology. By moving the VE to a system
