8.3.3 Summary
Oracle VM Server for x86 provides an enterprise-grade hypervisor solution for x86
systems. It does so by combining Oracle VM Server with the Oracle VM Manager
provisioning and management interface. Oracle VM supports a number of operat-
ing systems as guests, including Oracle Solaris 10. Creation of a Solaris 10 VM
is a straightforward process involving installation of the operating system from
standard installation media. Small customizations are required when the VM is
first booted to enable the network and to ensure that the correct device drivers are
used for disk and network access. Once the VM has been created, it can be used
to create a template for subsequent Solaris 10 virtual machines or used directly.
8.4 How to Enable xVM Hypervisor Live Migration
An important feature of most virtualization technologies is the ability to move
running virtual machines from one physical server to another with no impact to
end users. This feature can provide a zero-downtime environment and increase
both availability and flexibility. Live migration is useful in the case of a required
downtime maintenance window where operating system patching or a hardware
swap must be carried out on a target server. Any running virtual machine can be
moved to another server and then moved back once the maintenance window has
completed, without current users suffering any effects.
Here, using the steps described and the Technical Briefs referenced next, we dis-
cuss how to enable the live migration feature within xVM hypervisor and migrate
an Oracle Solaris 10 x86 guest from one server to another while it runs. The three
Technical Briefs are available as part of the OpenSolaris documentation repository
at http://hub.opensolaris.org/bin/view/Community+Group+xen/docs.
8.4.1 Technical Briefs
The technical briefs have the following titles:
How to Install OpenSolaris 2009.06 xVM hypervisor and Use It to Configure
Domains
How to Configure and Use ZFS-hosted iSCSI Guest Storage Within the xVM
Hypervisor (Part 1)
How to Configure and Use ZFS-hosted iSCSI Guest Storage Within the xVM
Hypervisor (Part 2)
The Technical Briefs also discuss the use of key Solaris features with xVM hy-
pervisor such as ZFS and iSCSI.
