Figure 8.10 Oracle Solaris Interactive Installation
Network devices are not discovered during the installation of Solaris with Oracle
VM 2.2. As a consequence, during the interactive installation, no network ques-
tions will be asked, addresses will not be assigned, and naming services will not
be assigned. Additionally, because no networks are discovered, Solaris JumpStart
cannot be used to install the virtual machine. Also, the data for the actual instal-
lation cannot be fetched via HTTP or NFS; it must be read from the installation
media. Once a single virtual machine has been created, it can be used as a template
and instantiated with different qualities as many times as required and much more
rapidly than is possible for even a network installation. This limitation during
installation does not mean that there will never be network access to the VM. In
fact, after the virtual machine is installed, network access can be enabled.
If the installation boot archive included both fully virtualized and paravirtual-
ized drivers, there is no need to change the network type after the installation.
This practice allows for network-based installation because networks will be dis-
covered automatically when the VM boots at the beginning of the installation.
8.3.2.6 Step 6: Reconfiguring the Network Interface
After the installation is complete, a few steps remain to create a fully functional
Solaris 10 guest VM. Most important among these steps for Solaris 10 10/09 is to
reconfigure the network interface and make it available to the VM.
