Oracle Solaris 10
as an x86 Guest
As we will discuss in Chapter 6, “Oracle Solaris Containers,” an Oracle Solaris
Container is a virtualized operating system (OS) environment created within a single
instance of the Oracle Solaris operating system. Today, many people also want to
run Solaris 10 as a full instance of an operating system in a virtual machine (VM)
of an x86 (or x64) computer. It is anticipated that the number of users seeking this
capability will increase in the future, and that the use of Solaris 10 as an x86 guest
will expand into other virtualization technologies as well.
This chapter discusses the use of Solaris 10 as an x86 guest running on Type
1 hypervisors only. Oracle's Type 2 hypervisor, Oracle VM VirtualBox (covered in
Chapter 5, “Oracle VM VirtualBox”) is capable of running Solaris 10 as an x86
guest and other x86 guests such as Linux distributions and Windows.
This chapter discusses the use of Solaris 10 as an x86 guest with respect to certi-
fication and support. In some cases, the OS is known to work but is not certified for
those circumstances. Each virtualization technology is covered at a high level with
respect to architecture and features. A comparison of each technology's features
and architecture is beyond the scope of this chapter.
This chapter provides information on running the Solaris 10 release as an x86
guest on the following virtualization technologies:
Oracle VM Server for x86
xVM hypervisor
