Poppy in the kitchen
Traditional poppy-growing areas in Europe each have their own specialty fare. In South Tyrol,
Italy, it is Mohnkrapfen (poppy crullers), which are baked for festivals. In the Waldviertel region
of Austria, where gray poppies are the most common varieties grown, Mohnzelten (poppy
“tents”) are the traditional festival food. Poppyseed is prepared in the same basic manner in all
regions: it is not ground but rather mashed, which makes it into a coarse, succulent meal.
