4.1.4 The Case of Au

The size-focusing method was extended to the largest ever Au

nanocluster
[

]. The synthetic protocol of this 2.2 nm atomically precise nanocluster is similar
to the case of Au

. Both cluster precursors were made through the
two-phase method, with a major difference in the HAuCl

(i.e., 1:2 in the case of Au

shows a comparison of ESI-MS and TEM characterization of Au

nanoclusters. This giant nanocluster approaches the current detection limit of
ESI-MS. New methods should be developed in future work to cope with giant
nanoclusters of larger size.
