FIGURE 2.9 Generalized view of subduction in: (A) a deep-sea trench in ocean-to-ocean convergence,
with an island arc of composite volcanoes moving along above it; and (B) a deep-sea trench in
ocean-to-continent convergence, where an accretionary wedge forms on the edge of the overlying
plate and magmatic arc forms in the mountain belt. The buoyant magma plumes that rise from
the subduction zones in both cases are responsible for building the island arcs.
