symbiotic partnership, in which each partner will lead in defining the process in
some situations and in other cases provide companion ability. The functions re-
lated to the leader/companion capabilities of dedicated partners will be decided
on the basis of maximising the overall performance of the joint symbiotic team,
Petriu (2008).
The primary motivation for the artificial human-based sensing concept, is to
explore but also generate an expected progress in a perceptive area of human com-
plementary sensor systems. The concept is foreseen to provide a new and emerg-
ing capability in human well-being.
This topic will hopefully contribute and view an extended approach that di-
rects the possibility of added perception abilities. The future developments will
most likely be in a continuos phase of technical and social progress, in order to
direct the focus on the fact that we as humans constantly have a need for a more
adequate sensing ability.
Therefore, we may intensify our efforts to establish the following influencing
aspects of motivation and arguments:
a continuously growing elderly population with decreased sensing perfor-
mance, will jointly request the accessibility for technical solutions, that are avail-
able on a commercial basis on the market.
a need is established for a new concept of sensor abilities to compensate for the
natural individual acuity that is affecting the variety of human perception.
a new era of more powerful computer based systems will create performance
that is more comparative with human capacity. This will provide a unique pos-
sibility, which at the end will create effective human-system interaction.
a necessity to use existing technology to compensate for disabled functions in
perception due to accidents or illness.
This general concept is indicative and has the overall purpose to provide
the specific individual needs of complementary sensing, that surely will provide
a truly improved perceptual quality. Further, it may contribute to improve the
human communication and interaction, aiming to achieve a valued social solidar-
ity, when allowing to be active and dignified. These are human values that today
in many cases would not be possible to achieve.
Although a vision for the coming decade may be to provide individuals with
the ability to experience more of the world around us and get an extra flavour
of new and artificial-based re-created sensations, that maybe since long time has
faded away. The technology push, towards the challenging symbiosis between
human-artificial behavioural system approach, will then be encouraging in order
to find effective human-related solutions on an individual basis.
However, the concept of improved human perception providing attractive
and increased values in the individual's performance will of course also exhibit
some problems. Individuals who do not actively make enough use of their senses
by simply not strengthening the limits of capable sensation, will in the long
run exhibit a decreased performance.
