A typical application in the peronal exterior sensor system approach can with
advantage be demonstrated in the search and rescue applications. These types of
applications are more frequently used in remote operations as a joint complement
to human perception. The search and rescue operations are often built upon differ-
ent skills in heterogeneous groups acting and interacting between humans, dogs
and robots. The concept of interactive technology systems, where both static and
mobile sensors are used to enter a hazardous and unknown area, e.g., a burning
building, an earthquake or other types of disaster situations, and in close interac-
tion with a human operator can be illustrated in Fig. 7.11. The human participation
can be seen as an active part in the communication loop that performs the strategy
and decisions, i.e., the artificial perceptual sensor systems may act as an essential
remote function to perceive information in the hazardous areas of interest. On the
other hand, the sensor systems can act as an autonomous object, providing the
human operator with requested or other relevant information.
The technical support systems that complement the search and rescue person-
nel in an environment, that is known as stressful, intensive and hazardous, are
aimed to find relevant information as soon as possible. It is considered to be a
trying, time demanding and often challenging task for the heterogeneous response
teams to smoothly interact with the environment with the aim to effectively
perform results. The main issue is normally to perceive essential information and
to manage these data in real time. This can be considered to be an ultimate ap-
