The general structure is further developed to explore a passive perception
model and put into a context of a gustatory sensor system, for example, an elec-
tronic tongue working as a predefined warning-based system. Outgoing from the
generic artificial perception model presented above, a passive approach is pro-
posed in the same reference.
As in all measurement systems, a useful and well-defined methodology is
required. The system goal has in this approach been defined, where existing
limitations and other strategic matters have been identified. In the passive mode,
however, the cognitive level specifies the goal by establishing the structure of
the environmental picture by defining the feature set. Depending on the specific
application, the feature set can be arranged in the scale from plain raw data to
an advanced analysing strategy. The sensing strategy is then planned to passively
observe the environment and to measure the parameters of interest. The processed
measurement is brought up to the cognition level and displayed to the user as
shown in Fig. 5.11.
