CHAPTER FIVE
AN ARTIFICIAL PERCEPTUAL MODEL APPROACH
The present trends of today often demand an increasing need for an extensive
and directed information flow. This flow of information includes a fundamen-
tal understanding that sensors have to produce specific data to be delivered at
the required time and in an acceptable quality to the user in order to be updated
and be useful. There is a probable foresighted scenario that in the future, will
the amount of requested information be highly competitive, delivered on time
and attain high enough quality. The sensor system will then also emphasise on
the dynamical and intelligent properties that will actively search for the requested
information and communicate to symbiotic units, e.g., an individual. The proper
planning and effective control of a sensor system, that provides essential and
requested information at the proper time of delivery, is an absolute condition to
achieve a smooth interaction. A proper interaction between the user and the units
that collect the required information, is a critical transference necessity to perform
a real-time integration system between the information collecting sensor level and
the information integrating system level in order to achieve the best possible use
of information in decisions. Therefore, the need for a generic model approach is
obvious.
Describing the human involvement, the term “context aware human computer
interaction” has been frequently used. The context and motivation is to react
appropriately to the momentary circumstances that occur constantly when used
extensively and implicitly, situational or context information, in interacting with
humans. The context aware human computer interaction, Smailagic (2001), Wu
(2003), refers to computing modes that are able to discover and react to changes
in the environment they are situated. The context aware human computer inter-
face then may increase the understanding of the reactive environment in order to
achieve a higher abstraction level, and aim for a more effective human interaction.
Adjacent to the research area of context aware human computer interaction, is
the natural relation to the human awareness by expanding the model represent-
ing the awareness of the reactive world to include the interaction with an artificial
sensor system. The human interfacing is a crucial step and one of the most funda-
mental tasks in building an effective and rational human-system interaction.
