long term, however, the new approach based on the application of tissue
engineering principles bodes well for the development of a new generation
of living vascular grafts with superior patency rates to current inert pros-
thetic materials.
Since the fi rst report of endovascular repair of AAA in 1991, this tech-
nique has become fi rmly established and in some larger centres EVAR
represents the majority of elective AAA repair. Devices are continually
being improved through better processing of the materials to enhance their
durability, the use of advanced manufacturing technologies and the devel-
opment of more compact, fl exible and reliable delivery systems. However,
the basic design of a porous fabric graft supported by a wire frame remains
unchanged. Signifi cant advances in future will require new strong and light-
weight fabric that is resistant to wear damage and stent materials that are
resistant to the hostile chemical and mechanical loading conditions in the
body.
