better insight is gained continuously. There is also a risk of late failure of
treatment, resulting in the need for life-long surveillance with a view to
identifying impending failure so that remedial action can be instituted. In
order to preserve the early benefi ts of EVAR, there is a necessity to prevent
late failure and death.
The component materials and some design features of different com-
mercial stent-grafts are given in Table 8.4. The materials used for the graft
are woven PET fabric grafts and ePTFE. The advantage of ePTFE is that
it has low porosity, relatively thin wall and yet strong. The woven fabric
materials used vary in thickness and strength. Although a thin fabric graft
can be compacted more tightly, thereby requiring a small and fl exible deliv-
ery system, the disadvantage is that its durability may be compromised and
some designs such as the Zenith uses a standard woven PET fabric found
in surgical vascular grafts. The metallic stent is of fundamental importance
to the endograft and its function is to provide structural integrity to the
whole device thereby ensuring support for the graft component and stable
fi xation. It is important that the mechanical and physical properties of
the stent are not impaired after implantation. Most stents use zigzag
or z-confi guration except for the Anaconda TM (Vascutek Ltd, Inchinan,
