Activation of leukocytes and their mobilization towards injured tissues are
critical steps in infl ammation and reperfusion injury. Activated neutrophils
may exert damaging effects on tissues of the host, indirectly by releasing
infl ammatory mediators and directly by damaging endothelial cells with
proteolytic enzymes.
