In-Depth Information
Non-common. path. errors. refer. to. aberrations. in. only. one. functional. path. of. the. system.. If. the.
.aberration.is.only.in.the.detector.path,.then.the.WFS.will.not.be.able.to.measure.it.and.therefore.the.
AO.system.will.not.correct.the.aberration.for.the.inal.image.that.is.acquired..hus,.the.image.quality.
is.degraded..Conversely,.if.the.aberration.is.only.in.the.WFS.portion,.the.AO.system.will.correct.for.an.
aberration.that.does.not.exist.in.the.image.acquisition.path,.which.will.also.degrade.the.image.quality.
In.the.example.of.an.AO.microscope.as.shown.in. Figure.9.1 ,. the.light.delivery.path.and.the.image.
acquisition.path.share.common.path.errors.and.the.WFS.has.an.additional.non-common.path.error.that.
is.created.by.the.relay.telescope.and.the.ilter.in.front.of.the.WFS.
Non-common.path.aberrations.can,.in.principle,.be.negated.by.calibrating.the.WFS..he.WFS.uses.
the.measured.slightly.aberrated.wavefront.as.the.“perfect.wavefront”.in.calculating.the.compensation.
needed.by.the.DM,.so.that.a.perfect.difraction-limited.image.is.produced.on.the.detector.camera.
To.achieve.a.difraction-limited.image,.the.wavefront.measured.by.the.WFS,.the.wavefront.generated.
at.the.DM,.and.the.wavefront.at.the.pupil.plane.at.the.science.camera.have.to.be.correctly.correlated.and.
interpreted..Any.misinterpretation.will.create.additional.phase.registration.error,.which.will.degrade.
the.image.quality..he.strong.emphasis.of.correct.pupil.plane.relay.in.an.AO.system.is.to.ensure.the.cor-
rect.phase.relationship..For.example,.if.the.scanner.is.not.at.the.conjugate.plane.of.the.WFS,.the.pupil.
projected.onto.the.WFS.is.moving.with.time.instead.of.being.stationary..As.the.speed.of.the.scanner.is.
usually.much.faster.than.the.response.time.of.the.WFS.and.DM,.the.Shack-Hartmann.WFS.can.mea-
sure.only.the.time-averaged.wavefront.and.any.high.spatial.frequency.aberration.may.be.averaged.out.
and.uncompensated. 16
