In-Depth Information
phylum Loricifera were discovered in the sediments of the deep anoxic hyper-
saline L'Atalante basin of the Mediterranean - the first metazoans known to
science that live their entire lives in conditions of permanent anoxia (Danovaro
et al . 2010). Such biological diversity, combined with the lengthy history of bac-
teria and archaea, which has equipped many species with an amazing array of
residual metabolic tools, adds up to a remarkable reservoir of capabilities which
may be of use to the environmental biotechnologist. Meeting the challenges to
come may well all boil down to how well we can integrate our thinking as much
as our technologies and capitalise on all that potential.
