structures are extremely important from the stand point of basic science
because their submicron geometry necessitates altering the traditional,
mathematical, and physical analysis.
The material quality and critical fabrication tolerances afforded through
MOCVD and the MBE permit fabrication of single crystals with nanometer
dimensions and ultimately single monatomic layers. This gives rise to previ-
ously unexplored conditions such as ellipsoidal symmetry of the exciton and
layer thicknesses less than the mean free path of the electron, and hence effects
such as exciton stability at room temperature and ballistic tunneling of electrons
and hot electrons. These effects will ultimately be implemented in a guided-
wave integrated format, affording improved optical system performance.
