als are radio-opaque. Therefore, it is di cult to differentiate the
new bone formation from the ceramic scaffolds. In addition, the
bioceramic is brittle and not suited for bone applications. A better
approach is to use a composite of bioceramic and a resorbable poly-
mer.
43.2 Bone Lengthening in Preclinical Animal Studies

distracted callus formation by the injection of calcium sulfate, cord
blood (CB) stem cell, and human recombinant bone morphogenetic
protein-2 (rhBMP-2).
43.2.1 Calcium Sulfate in Tibial Lengthening
Small monolateral external distraction devices (small bone distrac-
tor; U&I, Kyunggi- Do, Korea) were applied to the diaphysis of the
tibia of New Zealand white rabbits (5-6 months old; 2.0-2.5 kg)
