This paper presents a review of collagen-based scaffolds for bone
tissue regeneration by self-assembling. On the basis of discussing
the component and hierarchical structure in natural bone tissue,
the biomemitic fabrication of collagen-based bone tissue engi-
neering scaffolds using self-assembled collagen mineralization
and their current applications and development in bone tissue
regeneration are described. Some basic questions of biomemitic
fabrication concerning the composition, microstructure, crystal-
lography, and organic-inorganic phase relationships have been
reviewed. This kind of bone graft composite has already shown
greatpromiseandsuccessinclinicalapplications,onaccountofits
compositional and structural similarity to natural bone. It is sug-
gestedthatfutureworkinthisshouldfocusonbothbasictheoret-
ical aspects, as well as the development of applications.
