30.2.2 Pore-Size-Gradient Alginate Scaffolds
To prepare alginate cylindrical scaffolds having a pore size gradi-
ent, 2wt% alginatesolution wasslowly dropped into a 2wt%CaCl 2
solution with vigorous agitation using a homogenizer (20,000
rpm; HG-3000, SMT, Japan) to obtain fibril-like cross-linked algi-
nate structures (Fig. 30.2). The prepared fibril-like alginates were
washedinexcesswatertoremoveresidualCaCl 2 .Thenthefibril-like
alginate-suspended aqueous solution was poured into a polypropy-
lene (PP) cylindrical mold (inner diameter 14 mm; height 7.5 cm),
and the mold was centrifuged (3,000 rpm) for five minutes. During
the centrifugation, the fibril-like alginates were accumulated in the
cylindrical mold with a range of pore size gradients by the gradual
