blot analysis showed that the genes encoding the articular carti-
laginous matrices of type II collagen and aggrecan were expressed
by chondrocytes and their expression was upregulated, while that
for type I collagen was downregulated when the chondrocytes were
cultured in the hybrid mesh. The dynamic complex modulus, struc-
tural stiffness, and phase lag approached those of native bovine
articular cartilage. These results indicate that articular cartilage-
like tissue was regenerated when chondrocytes were cultured in
the PLGA-collagen hybrid mesh. The thickness and size of the engi-
neered cartilage implants can be adjusted by using a single layer of
mesh, laminating or rolling the hybrid mesh, and by controlling the
size of the hybrid mesh. The similarity of the results for the five-
sheet and roll implants to those for the single-sheet implant sug-
gests that an increase in the implant thickness did not compromise
cellviability,uniformity,orfunction.UseofthePLGA-collagenhybrid
