They described that the expression of IL-1 β mRNA was affected by
surfacewettabilityandproteinadsorption.Inthisstudy,theamount
of protein on the TCPS and PHEMA was the same as that on PMB5
and PMB10. However, the expression of IL-1
mRNA on TCPS and
PHEMA was high compared with that on PMB. A reduction in the
secretionofcytokineandheat-shockprotein(HSP)mRNAfromcells
in contact with aliphatic polyesters 33 or polyurethanes 34 blended
withMPC wasalso identified.
Cellular uptake by macrophages with the phagocytosis mecha-
nismisanothercellresponseevent.Whenthepolymerparticlesare
applied to the macrophages, the cells induce internalization of the
particles. This is caused by molecular recognition of the ligands on
the cell to the adsorbed proteins on the nanoparticles. In fact, the
polystyrenenanoparticles(fluorescencelabeled)canbeacceptedby
thecellularuptake,asshowninFig.19.7.Ontheotherhand,thesur-
faceofthenanoparticlesismodifiedwiththePMB30bycoating,and
cellularuptakeofthenanoparticlesiseffectivelysuppressed.Thisis
caused by the excellentbiocompatibilityof PMB30.
