In contrast, PMB with a 30 mol% MPC unit (PMB30) effectively
suppressed cell adhesion. While the adherent platelets may some-
times easily detach from the surface, they are strongly activated by
contact with the polymer surface and induce embolization. There-
fore, it is necessary to evaluate the activation of platelets barely
contacting the polymer surface and those adhering to the surface
to understand true blood compatibility. The activation of platelets
after contact with PMB30 was evaluated by measuring the concen-
tration of cytoplasmic calcium ions in the platelets. 11 The results
clearly indicated that the activation of the platelets that contacted
the PMB30 surface was less than that of those on glass and other
polymer substrates. That is, PMB is one of an excellent group of
antithrombogenicpolymersforthesuppressionofcelladhesionand
activation.

The macrophage is considered an important cell in the initial cellu-
lar response against implantable biomedical devices. Macrophages
mediate inflammation by the secretion of inflammatory mediators,
