In-Depth Information
SSRS includes Power View (independent of Excel 2013) and Report Builder 3.0, both of which you
can launch directly from SharePoint Products 2013. You can publish report server content types to a
SharePoint library and then view and manage those documents from a SharePoint site.
Because this topic is about BI in SharePoint, we should mention why you should use SharePoint for
managing SSRS reports. Stacia Misner explains it best in Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Reporting Services
(2013, Microsoft Press) when she says, “You'll have only one security model to manage and, even
better, business users will have only one environment in which to create, find, and share information,
whether that information is in the form of reports, lists, documents, or other content types. Further-
more, you can manage reports by using the same content management, workflow, and versioning
features that you use for other SharePoint content.”

data mining
SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) data mining tools provide a set of industry-standard data min-
ing algorithms and other tools that help you discover trends and patterns in your data. Data mining
works in SSAS to complement Excel. It helps you to discover surprises in data and often provides a
glimpse of “what will happen.” This is sometimes referred to as predictive analysis . Also, SSAS helps
you to validate what you think happened, to support a belief that is based on historic data.
The following Excel add-ins can help you perform predictive analysis:
Table Analysis Tools for Excel provide easy-to-use features that take advantage of Analysis
Services Data Mining to perform powerful analytics on spreadsheet data. For more infor-
mation, see SQL Server Predictive Analysis, at http://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/en/us/

New to the SQL Server 2012 Excel Add-in is 64-bit capability, a feature for which many have
waited that significantly enhances performance.
With the Data Mining Client for Excel Add-in, you can work through the full data-mining
model development lifecycle within Microsoft Office Excel 2010 and Excel 2013, using either
worksheet data or external data available through Analysis Services. The data mining add-in
requires a connection to either SQL Server Enterprise or BI edition.
5 SQL Server data Tools
SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT), previously called Microsoft Business Intelligence Development Studio
(BIDS), provide several intuitive wizards for building integration, reporting, and analytic solutions within
a unified environment. SSDT supports the complete development lifecycle for developing, testing,
and deploying solutions. The SSDT development environment uses a Microsoft Visual Studio shell and
includes project templates that make it easy to design solutions for ETL processes, cubes, and reports.
