Stage 1: Analytically impaired
In the first stage, operational data is not ready for analysis. Reporting directly from operational data
is fraught with problems and suffers from data quality issues. To progress to the next stage, manage-
ment needs to be convinced that better decision-making will result from data that is not only better
but also more accessible and actionable. Meanwhile, some technically savvy business users begin
compiling data for personal analysis. Excel is often the tool of choice at this stage.
