FIGURE 6-26 A page with two Excel Web Access Web Parts.
If you want the Web Parts to interact with one another, you connect them to some other Web
Parts on the page, such as one of the SharePoint filter Web Parts. In this case, changing a Web Part
that is connected to another Web Part causes both Web Parts to update. Setting up Web Part com-
munication is beyond the scope of this chapter.
Extending Excel Services
As you are designing a BI solution, inevitably you will run into places where the functionality that
came with the product isn't enough, and you might want to do something that is custom to your
particular needs. This is where extensibility comes in—extending the product into new scenarios
and functionality to meet a custom set of scenarios. This section provides a high-level overview of
the extensibility mechanisms available for Excel Services. It is not intended to be a one-stop shop
for details on any specific extensibility mechanism. Instead, it provides descriptions of what each
approach is, when you might want to use it, and then directs you to online references for more
information.
There are four primary ways to extend Excel Services: UDFs, Excel Web Services, JavaScript Object
Model, and REST. The following subsections provide an overview of each.
