When do you avoid using Power View?
The existence of multiple tools in the Microsoft BI stack reflects the reality that different tools serve
different purposes. As wonderful as Power View is, there are scenarios for which it is not the best
choice. In Chapter 2, “Planning for business intelligence adoption,” we provide an overview of the
available user tools to help you make the appropriate selection. In this section, let's consider the situa-
tions for which you should consider a tool other than Power View:
You want to present information that conforms to specific formatting or pagination guidelines,
or you want to make it possible for users to export the report to alternate formats such as
Excel workbooks or PDF files. In this case, you should use Reporting Services.
You want to distribute information to a wide audience by using subscriptions. Again, Reporting
Services supports this requirement.
You want to control the user's navigation path from one section of a report to another or from
one report to another. You can develop reports in Reporting Services and use actions to sup-
port this type of navigation.
You want users to be able to construct reports or dashboards from prebuilt components.
For this functionality, you can create and publish report parts in Reporting Services or
PerformancePoint components such as scorecards, indicators, charts, and grids for use in
SharePoint.
You want to explore data that contains many-to-many relationships, such as you might find
with bank accounts that have multiple owners or sales transactions for which multiple sales-
people receive credit.
