data refresh
Perhaps one of the most significant advantages of the internal xVelocity Data Model engine over the
PowerPivot for Excel 2010 Add-in involves data refresh. When you refresh data in Excel 2013, any cal-
culated columns and other metadata changes that you make in PowerPivot, are immediately reflected
in any underlying dependent report that you create in Excel. For instance, if you click the Refresh
button in the PowerPivot for Excel window (see Figure 4-23), or the Refresh button on the Data tab
(Figure 4-24), the Data Model will fetch data from the underlying data sources, refresh the data in the
Data Model, and then the new data will automatically be reflected in any PivotTable you might have
that references the related tables. In PowerPivot for Excel 2010, this used to be a two-step process.
You needed to refresh the data from the PowerPivot windows and then refresh the PivotTables to be
able to see the new data in your reports.
