the SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT) and be imported and deployed into an Analysis Services server. This
was already possible in Excel with PowerPivot for Excel 2010. However, for simple models, there is no
need to use PowerPivot. Also, Excel 2013 makes it possible for you to build Power View reports that
can be stored centrally in SharePoint. Figure 4-1 shows the high-level relationship of BI components
in Excel 2010, and Figure 4-2 shows how they are related in Excel 2013.
FIGURE 4-1 The Excel 2010 BI architecture.
The main changes in Figure 4-2 as compared to Figure 4-1 are the built-in xVelocity engine migra-
tion for the PowerPivot add-in to Excel (the Data Model), and the introduction of Power View Add-in.
In summary, with the new Excel architecture, the user can create and interact with data models by
using the xVeloxity engine, and the PowerPivot Add-in makes it possible for the user to create richer,
more complex reports, use DAX to work with data, create KPIs, and manage the Data Model.
