Beets:
BeetsareagoodchoiceforgardenersintheNorthernclimateastheygrowwellinthecooler
conditions. An excellent long-season crop as they are even able to survive frosty temperat-
ures.Willprosperwellinhighphosphorouslevels,buthighnitrogenmayresultinexcessive
leafiness and small bulbs.
Planting:
Seedscanbeplanted1-2inchesapartandĀ½inchdeep,butwaituntilsoilreaches50degrees
before sowing.
Iftemperature allows,plantingcanbeginlateMarch/Aprilandcontinueuntillateinthesea-
son. Plantings can be spaced around 20 days apart to allow for Beets throughout the season.
A good crop for late - even winter crops in zone 9 or above.
Plant Care:
Thin out the plants when they reach about 2 inches high by pinching them off at the base,
or snip with shears so not to disturb the ground. Leave a gap of around 3-4 inches between
plants.
