Beneficial Herbs
There are many herbs that can be extremely beneficial for your companion planting. Indeed
the herbs themselves can lend that extra dimension to your vegetable garden, that will com-
plement your vegetables - and improve your cooking!
Here is a list of some popular herbs along with the benefits they may have to certain plants.
Anise:
Anise is known to benefit beans and coriander plants.
Basil:
This is known to benefit asparagus, beans, cabbage and especially tomatoes.

and boring insects.
Caraway:
Thisisanidealherbforbreakingdownandconditioningpoorsoils.Italsoattractstheatten-
tion of wasps and other harmful insects, making it a good 'sacrificial' herb. Also known to
benefit strawberries and peas.
Chives:
An ideal companion for carrots, as it confuses the carrot fly. Also good around peppers,
potato, rhubarb, squash or tomato plants, as it deters insects - particularly aphids.
Fennel:
This makes a poor companion plant for just about anything - avoid planting near other
plants.
Lavender:
A good companion plant for many species as it's aromatic flowers attract many beneficial,
pollinating insects to the garden.
It will also deter fleas, ticks and even mice!
Mint:
This is another all-round beneficial companion for many plant species; and in particular,
peas, cabbage and tomatoes.
Mint is known also to deter insects, and even mice from your plants.
