Seeds or Seedlings?
WhenitcomestimetoplantoutyourSFG(havingfirstofalldecidedontheplantsyouwish
to grow) you then have to decide whether or not you will start with seeds or seedlings.
I will not spend a lot of time on this issue as it very much depends on your individual cir-
cumstancesorindeedinclination!Sufficeittosaythatplantingseeds-especiallyinanSFG
- is cheaper, but for many not as reliable as planting established seedlings which will give
you an instant veggie garden. You can grow the seedlings yourself and bring them on in a
greenhouse or other heated facility, or indeed purchase them from your local garden center.
If you are planting directly into your SFG from seed however, this is perfectly acceptable
and as mentioned it is certainly cheaper as you are not setting out long rows of seeds - most
of which are wasted when it comes time to thin them out. Do bear in mind however that
planting directly into your SFG usually means a delay until the weather is warm enough.
This in turn will mean that you have a shorter growing season in which to benefit from your
efforts.
This can be countered to some extend by planting them under a polythene mini-greenhouse
as in the earlier pictures, or even a covering of gardeners fleece if it is not too cold. Because
of the dense nature of the SFG method only a few seeds more than the actual plants you
require have to be planted, meaning that there is less to thin out when they eventually peek
through the soil.
Check the back of the seed packet to find the ideal germination conditions, as well as the
instructions for planting.
Instructions for growing a number of popular vegetables will be included in later chapters.
