Planting Out Your SFG
The above diagram is just one planting pattern for use with the SFG concept, although it
should be noted that as companion plants, growing tomatoes near potatoes is not ideal as
they are both in the same 'family' and so are prone to blight and use up the same nutrients
from the soil.
At the rear of the area you will have your tallest plants, like tomato or corn, so that they
do not block precious sunlight from the other plants. As the planting progresses to the front
south facing area, then the general idea is to plant in such a way as to give every plant the
amount of exposure to the sun that it needs to reach optimum growth.
Likewise if you are growing climbers like peas or beans, you would erect a simple frame or
trellis work to the rear for them to climb up.
